Qigong is a word that may never have entered your vocabulary before. Pronounced “chee-gong”, it is an ancient Chinese healing practice that combines meditation, controlled breathing, and gentle movement which allows energy to flow through the body.
Intrigued? Fascinated? A little confused? That’s okay. Let’s break it down for you. Here are five need-to-know facts about qigong.
1.It translates to “the master of one’s energy”
Combines two important concepts of traditional Chinese medicine, “qi” means “vital life force,” while gong means mastery or cultivation. Qigong is designed to cultivate the energy of nature into your body to improve your mental, physical and spiritual health.
2. It’s been around for thousands of years
Qigong goes back approximately 2,500 years, however Chinese historians have found evidence of qigong-like techniques from at least 5,000 years ago. Over time it has evolved and developed into the practice it is today.
3. There are many benefits to qigong
Qigong has a range of benefits – including reduced stress and anxiety, increased focus and improved balance and flexibility. The practice itself can also create a sense of calm and stillness in the mind as you connect to your body.
4. It is not the same as tai chi
While there are many similarities between the two practices, they are in fact very different. Think of qigong as a movement you do for a certain situation, whereas tai chi is a series of movements that work on the entire body in a flowing sequence.
Whether qigong is new to you or you’re already familiar with it, we invite you to explore the value they can add to your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.
